The Hey Sis Project, founded by Asha Munodawafa, is dedicated to empowering, uplifting, and inspiring young women from diverse backgrounds. It provides a supportive environment where girls can build confidence, engage in personal growth, and discover their unique paths. The project offers various programs, including leadership workshops, mentorships, networking events, and friendship groups, all aimed at fostering a sisterhood of impactful community and world leaders.
When 17-year-old Asha Munodawafa set out to hold her first fundraising event for the McGrath Foundation, she set a target to raise $1,000. As founder of the?Hey?Sister Project, the teenager was thrilled to have raised more than $1600 – well over her initial goal – to help ensure that no one goes through cancer without care!
More than 80 people attended the event held that the Parkes Tennis Courts.
“I’m so thrilled with the outcome and so grateful for the support of every who attended, donated and helped make the event a success,” says Asha. “The energy was positive, and it felt like a celebration of the community coming together for something meaningful.”
Attendees took part in a range of activities throughout the day, including live music, food stalls, tennis games, raffles and a best-dress competition, with prizes donated by local businesses.
“It was an amazing experience to see so many people, especially young people, come out and support such an important cause while having a great time,” Asha says.
One of the highlights of the day also included a head shave by Asha’s friend Layne in support of a close friend going through cancer.
“It was such an emotional moment that captured the spirit of the event, showing solidarity and support for a cause that affects so many people,” says Asha.
McGrath Cancer Care Nurse Dianne Green was also on hand to help raise awareness of the important work McGrath Cancer Care Nurses do.
“Dianne definitely supported me in making this event, but she has also really opened my eyes of the amazing support McGrath Cancer Care Nurses provide. It’s clear to me how impactful their role is in helping people and their families during such a difficult time. The work the McGrath Foundation does is something that deeply resonated with me after seeing the effects of cancer on loved ones around me.”
Asha encourages anyone wanting to hold an event to “just go for it!”.
“Start with a clear goal and don’t be afraid to reach out to your community, they’re often more willing to help than you might think. Collaborating with local businesses for raffle prizes or sponsorships is also a great way to get people involved. Stay organized, enjoy the process, and focus on the difference you’re making.
“As a 17-year-old, it was empowering to take the initiative and see the support I received from the community. The experience of bringing people together for a cause like this is so rewarding, and it shows the power of what a group of people can accomplish when they come together for something meaningful!”
