Oakland Cricket Clubs takes care to all cancers.

Oakland Cricket Club held their first Pink Stumps Day in 2018, after their long-serving treasurer Janelle was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Seven years later, the club has raised over $60,000 in support of the McGrath Foundation and the annual event has become a key date on the cricketing calendar, with a round-robin tournament, barbecues and raffles taking place throughout the day.

“We continue to be blown away by the generosity of our community, even with the cost-of-living crisis,” says organiser Ebony Goldsack. “When our event comes around, people don’t hesitate to support the day, by submitting teams, making prize donations for the raffle or donating money directly to our fundraiser.”

Ebony says the move to all cancers is something the event committee is “excited about” adding, “I can see that helping us get even greater support from our community, as I know a number of people and families impacted by many different types of cancer, not just breast.”

Close to 1 in 2 people in Australia will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

Oakland Cricket Club’s Pink Stumps Day sees a round-robin competition, with six-a-side. Each team must include at least one female, and one junior player, ensuring that the whole club gets involved.

This year’s winners, the “Nelby Warriors” are named in honour of Janelle, the reason behind the very first Pink Stumps Day event.

“That was an incredibly special moment,” says Ebony. “While not all original team members played it was nice for them to secure the win.”
